With the arrogance of youth, I determined to do no less than to transform the world with Beauty. If I have succeeded in some small way, if only in one small corner of the world, amongst the men and women I love, then I shall count myself blessed, and blessed, and blessed, and the work goes on. -- William Morris

Between the Realist and the Idealist

The Idealist says
“The truth is not here!
It waits for us somewhere out there!”
The Realist says,
“There is only the here,
And the truth is we only know where.”

But if the reality
Of ideals,
Are never quite real,
How can the realist
Oppose them?

And if the ideals
Of reality,
Are only ideas
How can the idealist
Propose them?

And if the ideal reality
Lies always beyond,
Who can behold
It as real?

And if real ideas
Keep us far from beyond,
Who can be told
They’re ideal?

When ideal realities
Become real ideas,
The dangers and perils
Are apparent:

Whose ideas are real?
Whose reality ideal?
The answer is never inerrant;

But between all ideals
And everything real
Where the real ideals
Make ideas grow real,
Beauty is always inherent.
